Nikki Tomlinson

The All-IN-ONE management operation: a discursive workshop looking at varied approaches to the challenges of producing and management

Are you a producer who manages artists? Or an artist who self-manages?

This 90-minute workshop will be led by Nikki Tomlinson, Artists Advisor with Artsadmin in London. It will focus on practical concerns emerging from participants' experiences of managing projects and artists, and will share tools and know-how that might benefit our work.

This workshop is especially targeted at young managers who have recently started working with artists and companies, and artists who currently manage their own projects and companies.

Nikki will give an overview of how the organisation Artsadmin functions, and what her role there involves. She will outline examples of varying working relationships, give 3 brief case studies of projects she has managed, and reflect on both successes and failures. Participants are invited to bring examples of current issues or obstacles they have come across in their working practices, and to share know-how, inspirations and strategies on how to approach common challenges.

Nikki Tomlinson has worked as Artists Advisor with Artsadmin since 2004, where she manages a range of professional and artistic development programmes. These include year-round advisory sessions for artists working in contemporary performance, the Artists' Bursary Scheme and Weekender Labs. She co-led the 3-year Balloon dramaturgy project wth Michael Atavar and in 2010 co-curated Town Hall Hotel Artworks with Manick Govinda. Her role with Artsadmin includes working as long-term advisor and now producer for the artist Stacy Makishi.

Nikki ihas an ongoing practice in choreography and performance and self-manages her own projects. Recent works include Plainsong (2009-10), a duet with the cellist Hannah Marshall and Folk Dance (2007-8), a performance installation made during a residency at La Caldera in Barcelona. She has shown work in the UK and in San Francisco, Barcelona and Gran Canaria. In 2010 she worked as dramaturg on Mamoru Iriguchi's Into the Skirt, commissioned by Plateaux at Mousonturm, Frankfurt. Nikki is a Trustee of Dance Art Foundation and a member of the SPACE Supporting Performing Arts Circulation in Europe Programme.
